Moira Bellamie's only goal is to become a Gendarmerie Magique, magic police. However, unlike most other humans, she has very little magic ability. The magic she does posses does very little compared to the other Gendarmerie Magique. She is only an apprentice in this organization while she attempts to prove she is worthy of becoming an actual employee. So far she is only able to destroy crime scenes with her magic, instead of using it to help solve cases.
This is until she accompanies a pair of detectives to a crime scene at the National Museum. Some artwork and ancient weapons are stolen and she is the only one who is able to see things in a different perspective. She can pick up on feelings when talking to witnesses or suspects. She is able to view a crime scenes and figure things out, when others can't. Moira is spotting things at this crime scene that the seasoned magic police have not. One man has faith in her and that is Sabio. He sees her talent and how she can figure things out and pick up on things that the other detectives can not.
When their suspects start dying, Sabio recruits Moira to help out. Her new partner is Druidus. They are instantly attracted to each other. They start off as just partners, but when Druidus confesses his love for her, they begin dating.
Druidus's parents do not like Moira, or any other woman that Druidus has shown any kind of interest in, so when his father comes to Moira offering her money to leave his son alone, it didn't surprise her. Not only is she having to help with solving all of these murders, but she also has to figure out how to deal with Druidus's parents. She is worried that their relationship will be just like her parents, and this has caused her to not fall head over heals in love with him. Soon, though, she can not deny that she loves him and she realizes she would rather give them a shot then nothing at all.
I gave this book 3 stars because of the authors imagination when writing this story. There are thumb-sized Nerls that make a living by helping these humans with tasks. They are paid with the energy from the humans they work for, and they grow from the energy that they earn. Some of these tasks that they perform are small like making coffee or being alarm clocks for their humans. The bigger tasks are things like keeping up with artifacts in the basement of the National Museum or even writing down what takes place in interrogations. The detail she used when describing crime scenes and situations were decent. I was able to picture what was taking place and I like that.
I had a hard time getting into the book in the beginning. What really pulled me in was the relationship that started between Druidus and Moira. I really like Druidus's character and I like how the author developed their relationship. I really enjoy mysteries and crime books, this was definitely up my alley. I did not enjoy this story as much as I thought I would. I believe that if this book was solely based on the crimes and the Gendarmerie Magique I would of had a harder time finishing it. My most favorite part of this book was the Nerls. I love Moira and Druidus, but this book just didn't do it for me.
